River-Inspired and Resilient Drought-Tolerant Design
At Kevin Wood Landscapes, we design dynamic, drought-tolerant landscapes for the vibrant, river-influenced properties of San Marcos. We understand that gardens here must be adaptable, thriving in the unique microclimates from shaded riverbanks to sunny hillsides near Texas State University, all with minimal water. Our approach creates layered, textured gardens that are both beautiful and ecologically sound, providing year-round interest while conserving water and supporting local wildlife.
Our design process honors the natural flow of the area. We select a diverse palette of native Texas plants and hardy adapted species perfectly suited to the local soils and conditions. For sunny spots, imagine the drought-defying beauty of Texas Sage and Rock Rose (Pavonia), the graceful movement of Deer Grass (Muhlenbergia rigens), and the structural forms of Red Yucca. For shadier, river-adjacent areas, we utilize resilient plants like Inland Sea Oats, Dwarf Palmetto (Sabal minor), and various ferns that thrive with less light and water. These plants are chosen for their deep root systems, ability to prevent erosion on slopes, and low water needs once established.
We integrate these resilient gardens with naturalistic, water-wise hardscaping. This includes dry creek beds that manage stormwater runoff while adding visual interest, permeable flagstone or gravel pathways, and efficient, zoned drip irrigation. Our designs often create serene garden rooms and gathering spaces that feel connected to the natural beauty of the area. The result is a low-maintenance, sustainable landscape that reduces your water use, minimizes upkeep, and provides a beautiful, resilient backdrop for student life, family time, or peaceful relaxation in San Marcos.
