Pine-Integrated, Drought-Resilient Design for the Lost Pines

At Kevin Wood Landscapes, we design specialized drought-tolerant landscapes that protect and enhance the unique ecosystem of Bastrop’s Lost Pines. We understand that gardens here must thrive in the sandy, acidic soil under a canopy of pines, requiring plantings that are deeply shade and drought-tolerant while complementing the forest’s natural beauty. Our design process begins by carefully assessing the light patterns and soil conditions under your pines. We select a curated palette of native understory plants and shade-adapted species that are perfectly suited to this environment. This includes drought-tolerant stars like the evergreen foliage of Dwarf Palmetto (Sabal minor), the delicate texture of Inland Sea Oats for gentle movement, the hardy, flowering Woodland Sage (Salvia azurea), and the resilient groundcover, Horseherb (Calyptocarpus vialis). These plants are chosen for their ability to prosper with minimal irrigation once established, their resistance to deer, and their role in creating a healthy, layered forest floor.

We integrate these graceful plantings with naturalistic, water-wise features. This includes pine needle and leaf mulch to retain soil moisture and mimic the forest floor, meandering pathways of pine straw or flagstone, and dry creek beds that manage occasional runoff. By designing in harmony with the pines, we craft a landscape that conserves water, reduces erosion, and requires very little upkeep—creating a peaceful, sustainable sanctuary that honors the majestic and irreplaceable character of Bastrop’s Lost Pines.
